Quote 1:”One day this will stop,” my mother told him. Then she ran home, crying.

Significance: I chose this quote because it really made me sad to think that because of her pride, her mother didn’t want to get help from anyone else and that because she had no money at all, she had to drop the children off at their uncles house in order to eat. This shows how much she loves them, because she didn’t stay to eat, she went home and worked.
Question 1: Why does she choose to not care about herself and treat herself bad?
Quote 2: “I knew it,” she shouted. “I knew you’d act like this. I’m pregnant, not ungrateful.”

Significance: I choose this quote because it really shows some of the culture of the people in this book. If you read the whole chapter you’d see that she was sent away because she was pregnant and the father didn’t admit to his family that he was the father. This shows how much of their culture revolves around respect.
Question 2: Why would Tante Denise send her away that quick, why didn’t she wait to see what the guy would do?

Qu1: one day it may stop or it may not.
Question 1: she may want them to live better instead of starve.
Qu2: WILL HER MOM LIE OFF OF IT, THERE IS NOTHING THAT SHE CAN DO NOW!
Question 2: she probably didn’t want her to feel bad.
Quote 1: I also felt really bad for the mom because it must be such a horrible feeling that you can't give your children food for dinner. I think that the mother never wanted her life to be like this, where she has to drop her kids off to eat, so I think that is why she ran home crying.
Question 1: I think that she is trying to punish herself by not giving herself a break. I also think that she doesn't have time to care or take care of her herself with her kids.
Quote 2: I never thought about her culture when reading this quote, and I think that it is a good thing to think about, because when someone gets pregnant in America, we usually don't send them away but in Haiti they do. I think that Marie is trying to say that she knows that she did a bad thing, and she feels bad about it. But she is also mad at her parents for saying things like "after all we have done for you", so I think that she wanted to tell them that she is not ungrateful for everything they have done.
Question 2: I think that it was just the fact that she wasn't married to the man that got her pregnant and Tante Denise didn't want anyone to find out about it, so she just quickly sent Marie away.
Quote one: You basically explained what I felt about this quote, she is a kind mom who only wants the best for her children through better and worse and will always pull through and put them before herself. (If that's a good thing or not- depending on the situation.)
Question one: I think she just cares about other people more than herself and she just is not making time for herself. She thinks it's more important to see them happy then be happy herself.
Quote two: Your right, because I've never heard of a culture before this that would just send away their children if they were pregnant. Even in countries where parents don't want their kids to get pregnant at a early age, I've never heard of them getting so upset and basically removing them from the family. It's hard to understand and see some cultures especially living in a very different one.
Question two: She probably didn't want anything to do with him and was maybe really upset at the moment and did not give any time to consider and think about it. Maybe she'll regret it later.
